PRESENTATION
Unlike Mate 7, which arrived on the market in relative anonymity, the Mate 8 launches into the deep end by having to assume the commercial and critical success of its predecessor. To remove this pressure, the PHABLET gets a solid specifications.
It includes a screen IPS Full HD 6 ", a mobile chip octal-core HiSilicon Kirin 950, 3GB of RAM, a graphics chip Mali-T880 MP4, main photo sensor 16MP capable of shooting Full HD 1080p at 60 frames / s, another front-end 8 MP, 32 GB of internal memory (+ microSD) and all the connectivity of the moment as 4G + (Cat 6) and NFC. the set fits in the dimensions of 157 x 81 x 8 mm (185 g), runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and is powered by a battery of 4000 mAh non-removable. a dual-SIM function and a biometric fingerprint reader are also in the game.
Huawei Mate 8 will be available for sale from January 29, the public price recommended € 599 for version 3 GB RAM / 32GB ROM (tested here) and € 699 for the 4GB RAM / 64GB ROM.
ERGONOMICS AND DESIGN 5/5
Let's start by stating the obvious: the Mate 8 is great. Obviously, do not expect anything else from a PHABLET with a 6 "screen. If you are allergic to these products, it is better to go immediately your way. For others point out that despite this display of very significant size, the whole is compact enough for the category. the screen indeed occupies nearly 80% of the front surface. An excellent optimization thus allowing the Mate 8 display dimensions equivalent to those of the iPhone 6s more despite its significantly larger display.
Once the device in hand, its weight of 185 g does not at all feel the extent that it is perfectly distributed, with a perfect balance with the key. As for the quality of manufacturing, it is not left behind. Huawei has again opted for metal chassis with brushed aluminum edges and very thin screen edges. The whole exudes quality and provides a very good feeling. Especially since the thickness of 7.9 mm comes not spoil the picture.
As for the S Mate, Mate 8 that manages the small feat of being perfectly usable in one hand. The manufacturer has indeed renewed by his little software trick that reduces the size of the display at about 4 "simply by sliding your finger successively on the three navigation keys. This makes it very easy to manipulate all the interface in one hand.
Finally, a word about the fingerprint reader on the back of the device to close this part. Huawei assures that it is 100% faster than before. But insofar as we have never had to reproach any slowness to those that were found in the Mate 7 Mate and in S, difficult to see the difference. In all cases, the release is effected very rapidly and reliably.
There is a little over a year, Huawei had known his surprise the world with the quality of the screens and his Mate 7 Mate 7 Gold. The Mate 8 incorporating the same features with a display Full HD IPS 6 ", we expected him to do at least as well as its predecessors under the probes in our lab. But this is unfortunately not the case, in particular side colorimetry with a deltaE 3.9 and a 6849 Kelvin color temperature. Please note that these values are very good in the absolute. They are just a little below the best of the genre. the touch responsiveness and retentivity not a problem, with respectively 59 ms and 16 ms Finally, the new screen came strong shot from the side maximum brightness (496 cd / m²) and contrast (1426: 1).. the slab shows a light reflection 13%, the industry average, but relatively far from 8% a Galaxy S6 edge + for example. However, the consultation of this outdoor display poses no problem, even on sunny days.
So why not he has the maximum score? Our algorithm takes into account the pixel density. With a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 px, the smartphone is far from ridiculous in this area. But with his long diagonal 6 ", the result is a 368 pixel density" only ". Now all the top models of the 2015 series delivers superior results, which leveled the high requirements of our methodology. attention, which lost the fifth star is not only the density of pixels per inch, but also the fact that the color values are not perfect. If it had been, they would have compensated density. as said highest, these results are correct. But the excellent displays have less than 3 deltaE and a very close score of 6500 Kelvin color temperature.
However, even if these values are not quite as good as those of predecessors or competitors of the best models of the year - such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + or iPhone 6s Plus - The Mate 8 takes advantage of all even a very good screen. The latter shows more comfortable for all types of use, both textual (web browsing, email, e-books, etc.) and multimedia.
INTERFACE AND NAVIGATION 5/5
To animate his Mate 8, Huawei has unsurprisingly opted for the latest version of Android (6.0.1 Marshmallow), on which he ditched his usual EMUI interface, here in version 4.0. Recall that it takes broadly the usual operation of the Google OS, except for one detail. The applications menu here has been deleted. Everything happens on one level, one of the home screens, like an iOS. It will take some time to adapt to those who have never handled one such interface. But the handling is quick and EMUI proves pleasant to practice every day. That's the main thing.
With EMUI 4.0, we note the emergence of a multi-window mode. If it is practical on such a big screen, he suffers for the moment the limited number of applications with which it is compatible. But we expect that this is going quickly. There are also many gestural controls, including achievable with the phalanges (Knuckles), to make screenshots or launch an application by drawing a letter on the screen. The fingerprint reader allows for its part to trigger a shooting or answer a call. However, we can not lower the tray from there.
Under the hood, Huawei has put the dishes in large to turn its interface perfectly. In the bowels of 8 Mate include the new chip HiSilicon 950 Kirin Chinese manufacturer. So far, his house solutions have always been a little behind compared to those of the best competitors. Combined with 3 / GB of RAM on our test version, this chip proves this time be a true racing machine. It indeed offers a truly remarkable fluidity and reactivity smartphone. It's all here perfectly and without a hitch, the menu navigation to the appearance of multitasking through open applications or web pages that appear with impressive speed.
A version of the device with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage exists, but one wonders what it can do more as the result here is perfect. Tip: If you decide to buy this Mate 8 content with version 3 GB RAM / 32GB ROM tested here. The other, more expensive, can not possibly be more efficient. At least not perceptibly for use. And if you need more storage memory, a microSD card of 128 GB will always be cheaper than the hundred euros difference between the two references.
MULTIMEDIA 5/5
With its large display of very good quality, 8 Mate is unsurprisingly excellent smartphone for those who want to watch videos on the move. Especially since independence for that particular use is quite daunting as you can see in the last part of this test. The only small downside is fetching the side of compatible formats. If .mp4, .mkv or the the .mov no problem, the fact is not the same .avi, but this does not constitute an unacceptable item insofar just install from Google Play one of many apps of high-quality video playback, such as MX Player for everything
is in order.
Side games, Mate 7 was a bit disappointed in terms of raw performance. Huawei back on track with this Mate 8. Kirin 950 chip is flanked by a graphics chip Mali-T880, which also has an exemplary behavior. Dead Trigger 2 starts eg with the detail level immediately pushed to the maximum. During the parties, the title never slows down and shows no sign of weakness. Even more indicative of the good performance of the smartphone for gaming, the dreaded Riptide GP2 also rotates like a Swiss cuckoo. Remember that with all settings pushed to the maximum levels, this game is able to kneel a Galaxy S6 Edge +. But not 8 Mate who cashes the shock almost without flinching. Why "almost"? Because in the settings area, the placing of an "Shader Complexity" from high to medium crashes the application. impossible to see the moment when the unit is able to climb that last little hill.
The audio output of 8 Mate is among the very good students. In addition to a very broad powerband, coupled with almost no distortion, it provides a record of the balanced soundstage, wide and well marked. The two grids are present on the bottom edge of the phone, but only one of them has a speaker. Rendering the latter is more honest with a return of relatively broad spectrum, even if there is acute hissing slightly at full volume.
PICTURE 4/5
So far this test Mate 8 holds the chorus of praise, there is still a point that it is a bit disappointing, ie the photographic rendering. The device features a sensor of 16 Megapixels stabilized (OIS). The photographs he captures are not bad in absolute terms, but compared to other high-end, they turn out a little behind in terms of the level of detail or in low light performance, as you can see for yourself in our face-to-face picture.
It is especially surprising that even the Nexus 6P, manufactured by Huawei also does better in these areas. We also note here deformations to the edge. Finally, a word about the capture videos to finish. If the captured clips in Full HD 1080p at 60 frames / s are found blameless, we would have still liked to also shoot in 4K UHD-. This will probably not used to very many people at the moment, but history will not be the same in a few months, when UHD TV invade the stores.
SELF 5/5
The Mate 7 did not fail to disappoint a little in spite of its very substantial battery of 4000 mAh. Its autonomy was generally good, but not in connection with the promises of such capacity. The Mate 8 has the same configuration. But the same causes do not always produce the same consequences. The device achieves 1:07 p.m. score in our test of independence. Which is a great score, but still lower than almost an hour to those of the best, such as the recent Moto X Force. However, with use, Huawei's smartphone does not fail to impress. Even without specially arranging the mount, it is always able to hold two full days. In this period, we have watched on average over an hour of video (40 min 40 min streaming and local), used the music player at least three hours and played for a good hour. In addition to conventional usage (calls, emails, social networks, etc.). A phenomenal autonomy by the time therefore likely. This finding is also confirmed by our video playback test streaming, in which the Mate 8 held 1:50 p.m.. This is nothing less than the best result we have ever recorded in this test.
As on the previous smartphone dual-SIM Huawei, here we must choose between dual-SIM function and additional storage capacity. The second SIM slot is indeed the same place as that of the microSD. Otherwise, the phone function provided neither good nor bad surprise. It shows classic and effective. As for audio quality conversation, there is again no complaints. If the rendering of voice does not reach perfection, it is still good enough to not be open to criticism. Calls result in light trade, and without audible popping unwelcome for both parties. Similarly, the GPS fix did not pose any particular problem. It turns fast and reliable. Finally, note that the unit also features a new mode "Signal +". This promises to improve the reception quality of Mate 8 in delicate situations, such as when the device is between two terminals, or on a train. But in the absence of protocol to test this new feature, we can not comment on its effectiveness.
STRONG POINTS
The giant screen, both very well made and comfortable.
The build quality is superb.
The fluidity and responsiveness, exceptional.
Playback of multimedia content.
The very nice interface.
The very effective biometric reader.
WEAK POINTS
Not capture video in 4K UHD-while all the competitors offer.
Very good photo function, but not at the best.
CONCLUSION 5/5
With Mate 8, it is clear that Huawei has worked to eradicate the few flaws Mate 7. The newcomer thus improves an already good formula. Logically, it is hard not wholeheartedly recommend this newcomer to fans of PHABLET. Because beyond the successful design, quite outstanding performance, the successful multimedia delivery or of phenomenal autonomy, Mate 8 is a really nice smartphone for everyday use. Too bad the photo function is not of the same ilk. Especially since it is faced with references of the genre, such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge +, the iPhone 6S Plus and even the Google Nexus 6P from the same manufacturer. But even faced with this increased competition, the Mate 8 was not ashamed of his performance overall.
